It has been said the 20th century was to have been the apogee of civilization—humanity reaching its maximum potential. As the 1800s surrendered to the 1900s, people everywhere envisioned nothing short of a remarkable future for the planet. With dominance over the seas, the sky and the airwaves through bold new technical wizardry, the world began to place its faith in complex and astonishing machinery that could never go wrong or fail. After centuries of comparative ignorance, the mechanization of a new world order would give the human race mastery of the known universe and, at last, make life a virtual heaven on earth.
And then ironically, in the infancy of this century of promise, an event gave humanity a bitter slap in the face. With it, the world experienced a collective life lesson—a coming-of-age story nearly mythic in proportion while sobering in its message of human fallibility, fragility and need for humility. And from that moment forward, the century’s beacon of promise seemed to dim.
The late night of April 14 and early morning of April 15, 2012 mark the 100th anniversary of the sinking of RMS Titanic. FYT has planned thought-provoking and emotionally engaging special events commemorating the great ship, the events surrounding her short and tragic career and the people who sailed aboard her.
Scotland Road
Written by Jeffrey Hatcher
Saturday, April 14
10:00pm
Advance and day of performance tickets: $7.00
A beautiful young woman in 19th century clothing is found floating on an iceberg in the middle of the North Atlantic. When rescued, she says only one word: Titanic. What follows is a cat-and-mouse game of intrigue and psychodrama probing self-identity.
"Hatcher has not just written a mystery. He actually probes who we really are inside as opposed to what image we present to the world." —Cincinnati Post
The performance time has been chosen to coincide with the time the ship struck the iceberg—11:40pm.
The staged reading includes a talk-back with the director and actors following the performance.
A Titanic Centennial Album
Sunday, April 15, 2:30pm
Advance and day of performance tickets: $5.00
Join FYT in welcoming an impressive panel of Titanic experts as they share their intimate knowledge of the ship and its people. The event includes a multi-media presentation of images of the ship as well as a memorial service for the more than 1,500 souls who lost their lives in the sinking a century ago.
Trace Titanic
Written by William P. Ward
Sunday, April 15, 4:30pm
Advance and day of performance tickets: $7.00
FYT has a long history with Titanic, going back twenty years to the summer of 1991 when Trace Titanic premiered on the Bower Theater stage. Revived in 1992, 1995 and last in 1998, Trace Titanic is one of FYT’s signature productions. It is fitting the 100th anniversary of the sinking will be the final opportunity to experience it on the FYT stage.
“This tightly crafted, multi-dimensional time trilogy . . . more than merely the story of the Titanic, it comes to represent life’s fragility against the powers of nature, human arrogance and destiny.” —The Flint Journal
The staged reading includes a talk-back with the director and actors following the performance.
A White Star Line Banquet
Sunday, April 15, 6:30pm

As a finale to the centennial weekend, FYT offers a delectable dinner banquet reminiscent of the type of culinary delights served by the White Star Line aboard its ships. In a candlelit salon, the multi-course meal accompanied by excellent wine is the perfect way to conclude your memorial visit with the RMS Titanic. A vegetarian option is available upon request.
