Continental borders have never defined classical music, nor the imaginations of classical composers. Unbound by the political enclosures of man, every symphonist has plucked, extracted and expanded upon the global culture of music to appease the fervor for their craft. On this season opener, the FSO brings a tragic German fable to life with The Flying Dutchman overture. Then, in contrast, American composer Barber’s flowing, beautiful melodies emanate from the strings of a fine violinist. Spanish melodies and rhythms from a well-loved French composer round out the evening of travels.
